How do you know if you identify with the Taboo Teacher archetype?

Well, let’s look at what is considered “taboo.”

Taboos are usually defined and decided on by mainstream social customs that aim to shame and forbid anything they deem immoral, unacceptable, and even uncomfortable.

A Taboo Teacher is willing to challenge what is often considered “taboo.” They aren’t interested in adhering to the status quo and an arbitrary set of rules when the status quo doesn’t always make sense, especially when it inflicts shame on groups of people often told they don’t “belong.”

Instead, a Taboo Teacher is committed to helping others express themselves more openly. They offer new experiences, invite students to explore differing perspectives, encourage truthful self-expression, and offer ways to experience more freedom, self-love, purpose, and connection.

A Taboo Teacher lives what they teach, is open to new ideas, and values integrity and telling the truth. (Even telling the truth is treated as Taboo)

Yes, it can feel scary to challenge the norms of society or any particular industry (aka, the dieting and wellness industry for one). Yes, it means being seen more and knowing not everyone will agree. AND it does mean living and teaching in a more truthful way you can be proud of.

Even in 2020, this can mean talking and teaching about sex, sexuality, different relationship dynamics, adult entertainment, self-love that’s truly for everyone, grief, death, different forms of art and dance. The list goes one. And I know that we need more high-integrity and amazing teachers and coaches sharing their wisdom and pushing the envelope. That’s what this is all about

If you identify with the Taboo Teacher archetype, being told what to do and fitting into a box of professionalism & likability or conforming to a set of expectations will never feel right or sustainable in anything you create. You’ll naturally rebel against all the “rules” of business & find them very constraining.

So if you’re been trying to launch your own business, course, or program, it makes sense that you may have stalled your own progress…because how could you launch something into the world you don’t also love and feel proud of?

For you, it can’t be about doing all the right things and following all the systems and rules to launching a business.

It’s about really knowing what you’re about, what you teach, and how you personally express that to others. In other words: FIND YOUR WORDS.

HOW SHOULD A TABOO TEACHER APPROACH COURSE CREATION AND PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT?

You start with your message. Always.

What is your message: It’s what you want to see change. It’s what you passionately think about, research, and seem to come back to no matter how many rebrands or ideas you’ve tried.

This isn’t the same thing as picking a niche or topic. Your message informs the why behind what you’re teaching and your approach to teaching your topic. For example, you might be a rebel nutritionist who wants to help people get away from diets rather than starting a new set of restrictions.

Your message = End dieting culture (and list all the reasons why)

Your Possible Topic: A Rebel Nutritionist’s Plan to End Yo-Yo Dieting and Have You Loving Food & Yourself Again

When you’re passionate about so many things and could explore an endless number of topics.

I want to say, from both experience and doing this work with others for years, you don’t have to start with having all that figured out. Develop your teaching VOICE and your MESSAGE and start somewhere with a course topic. EXPERIMENT.

For the time being, you can even let go of needing a brand, a logo, a website, a fully polished sales funnel, and even a clear and succinct elevator speech.

Instead, how would it sound to get to put your complete focus into developing an incredible message and program that feels just like you and ends up being the best possible fit for the kinds of clients you’ve been looking for all along?

I work with coaches and teachers who challenge the dieting industry, the beauty industry…they teach pole dancing, they teach burlesque, they are empowered in a lot of different ways that some people might consider intimidating or taboo….hence the term “Taboo Teachers”

What this also means is it’s daunting to try and package everything they care about, think about, teach about, and help other people with into one brand or message.

Really, it’s not about doing all the right things and following all the systems and rules to launching a business.

It’s slowing down and figuring out how you express yourself best and bringing that out in everything you create.
